Afghanistan

Political journey

A buffer between empires, Afghanistan resisted British and Soviet invasions, became a republic in 1973 and fell into war after a 1978 communist coup. The Soviet occupation, civil war and the first Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001 were followed by two decades of US-led intervention. The Taliban returned to power in August 2021 and govern under Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, banning girls from secondary school and women from most public life.
