Albania

Political journey

Independent from the Ottoman Empire since 1912, Albania became a kingdom under Zog, then fell to Italy and Germany. After 1944 Enver Hoxha built one of the most isolated communist regimes in the world and banned religion in 1967. Communism collapsed in 1990 to 1992, followed by a chaotic transition and the 1997 pyramid-scheme crisis. Albania joined NATO in 2009 and is a candidate for EU membership.

Edi Rama sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and leaning authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly tech-optimist on technology, leaning authoritarian on liberty and authority and leaning secular on religion. The profile is close to the middle on nation and institutions.
