Algeria

Political journey

Independent from France in 1962 after a brutal eight-year war, Algeria was run by the FLN as a one-party state until riots in 1988. A civil war in the 1990s between the army and Islamists killed some 200,000 people. Abdelaziz Bouteflika ruled from 1999 until mass protests removed him in 2019, and the army remains the dominant power behind President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
