Angola

Political journey

A Portuguese colony until 1975, Angola then fell into a civil war, backed by the Cold War superpowers, that lasted until 2002. The MPLA, which has governed since independence, presided over an oil boom with deep inequality and corruption. João Lourenço, president since 2017, has pursued anti-corruption measures while keeping his party in power.

João Lourenço

President of Angola, 2017 to present

Succeeded José Eduardo dos Santos, launched an anti-corruption drive and diversified Angola’s foreign partnerships while the economy remains reliant on oil.

João Lourenço sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly institutional on institutions and leaning nationalist on nation.
