Antigua and Barbuda

Political journey

A British colony from the 17th century built on sugar and slavery, Antigua and Barbuda gained full independence in 1981. The Bird family’s Labour Party dominated the decades that followed, and its successors have used tourism and citizenship-by-investment to fund a small economy. As a low-lying island state it lobbies hard for climate finance.
