Armenia

Political journey

The first state to adopt Christianity as its official religion, in 301, Armenia spent centuries under foreign rule and suffered the genocide of 1915. It became a Soviet republic and independent in 1991, then fought Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, losing control of it in 2020 and 2023. Under Nikol Pashinyan, who came to power in the 2018 Velvet Revolution, it has sought a peace deal and closer ties to the West.
