Australia

Political journey

Colonized by Britain from 1788, displacing its Indigenous peoples, the colonies federated into the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. It fought alongside Britain and then the United States in the world wars, built a strong welfare and immigration state, and remains a constitutional monarchy. A 2023 referendum to recognize Indigenous Australians with a Voice to parliament was rejected.
