Austria

Political journey

The heart of the Habsburg Empire until 1918, Austria became a republic, suffered a brief civil war and an authoritarian regime in the 1930s, and was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938. Occupied by the Allies until 1955, it regained sovereignty on condition of permanent neutrality. A stable, consensus-driven democracy since, it joined the European Union in 1995.
