Bangladesh

Political journey

Born in 1971 from a war of independence against Pakistan, Bangladesh saw its founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman assassinated in 1975, followed by years of military rule. Democratic politics became a bitter rivalry between Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. A student-led uprising ended Hasina’s 15 years in power in 2024, and the BNP’s Tarique Rahman became prime minister after the 2026 election.
