Belarus

Political journey

Part of the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union, Belarus became independent in 1991. Since 1994 it has been led by Alexander Lukashenko, who has concentrated power through referendums and disputed elections, crushed the 2020 protests and tied the country closely to Russia, including letting Russian forces use its territory during the invasion of Ukraine.

Alexander Lukashenko

President of Belarus, 1994 to present

Often called Europe's last dictator, he has ruled for three decades, crushed mass protests after the disputed 2020 election and is a close ally of Russia.

Alexander Lukashenko sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: strongly state-led and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly state-led on economy and strongly nationalist on nation.
