Belgium

Political journey

Independent from the Netherlands since the 1830 revolution, Belgium became a constitutional monarchy and an industrial power with a colonial empire in Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. Tensions between Dutch-speaking Flanders and French-speaking Wallonia turned it into a federal state by 1993, with coalition governments that can take many months to form. It is a founding member of the EU and hosts its main institutions.
