Brazil

Political journey

A Portuguese colony until 1822, Brazil was an empire, then a republic, and lived under a military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. Democracy has since brought landmark social programs under Lula, an impeachment in 2016, the far-right presidency of Jair Bolsonaro and Lula’s return in 2023, in a country deeply polarized between left and right.
