Political journey

An Ottoman province until 1878, Bulgaria became a fully independent kingdom in 1908 and sided with the Central Powers in the First World War and the Axis in the Second. It was a communist state under Todor Zhivkov from 1954 to 1989, then moved to democracy and a market economy. Bulgaria joined NATO in 2004, the European Union in 2007 and the euro in 2026.
