Burundi

Political journey

A former Belgian-ruled kingdom that became independent in 1962, Burundi endured repeated ethnic massacres between Hutu and Tutsi and a civil war from 1993 to 2005. Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in 2015 triggered a political crisis. The ruling CNDD-FDD party, led since 2020 by President Évariste Ndayishimiye, dominates one of the world’s poorest countries.
