Cambodia

Political journey

Home of the Angkor empire, Cambodia was a French protectorate until 1953, then endured the Khmer Rouge regime of 1975 to 1979, which killed about a quarter of the population. Vietnamese forces toppled it, and a UN-run transition in 1993 restored the monarchy. Hun Sen ruled from 1985 to 2023, when he passed power to his son Hun Manet.
