Cameroon

Political journey

Formed from former French and British territories that became independent in 1960 and 1961, Cameroon has had just two presidents since independence, Ahmadou Ahidjo and Paul Biya, who has held office since 1982 and is among the world’s oldest leaders. A conflict between the government and English-speaking separatists since 2017 has killed thousands.

Portrait of Paul Biya

Paul Biya

President of Cameroon, 1982 to present

One of the world’s longest-serving heads of state, in power since 1982, he was re-elected in 2025 at 92 amid opposition claims of fraud.

Paul Biya sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, leaning traditional on culture and leaning nationalist on nation. The profile is close to the middle on technology.
