Chad

Political journey

Independent from France in 1960, Chad has known decades of civil war, coups and rebellions, and is one of Africa’s poorest countries despite oil. Idriss Déby ruled from 1990 until he was killed fighting rebels in 2021, when his son Mahamat took over with the army’s backing. He was confirmed in a 2024 election that opponents disputed.

Portrait of Mahamat Déby

Mahamat Déby

President of Chad, 2021 to present

A general who took power after his father Idriss Déby was killed in 2021 and was confirmed by a contested 2024 election, while balancing between France, Russia and the Gulf states.

Mahamat Déby sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly state-led and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly traditional on culture and strongly strength-first on war and peace. The profile is close to the middle on environment and technology.
