Chile

Political journey

Independent from Spain in 1818, Chile was a stable republic until the 1973 coup by General Pinochet overthrew Salvador Allende and began a dictatorship marked by torture and free-market reforms. Democracy returned in 1990. Protests in 2019 led to two failed attempts to rewrite the constitution, and José Antonio Kast’s conservative government took office in 2026.
