Political journey

A small Indian Ocean archipelago that became independent from France in 1975, though one island, Mayotte, stayed French. It has suffered around 20 coups or attempted coups, including several led by the mercenary Bob Denard. Azali Assoumani, who first took power in a 1999 coup, has been president again since 2016.
