Cuba

Political journey

Freed from Spanish rule in 1898 and formally independent in 1902 under US influence, Cuba was ruled by dictator Fulgencio Batista until the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro created a one-party communist state. It survived the US embargo, the Missile Crisis and the loss of Soviet support. Under Miguel Díaz-Canel, who took over from Raúl Castro, it faces a deep economic crisis.

Miguel Díaz-Canel sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: strongly state-led and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly state-led on economy and leaning secular on religion. The profile is close to the middle on technology and interventionism.
