Political journey

Independent from Britain in 1960 with a power-sharing constitution between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, which collapsed into violence. A Greek-backed coup in 1974 prompted a Turkish invasion, and the island has been divided ever since, with a Turkish Cypriot north recognized only by Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004.
