Czech Republic

Political journey

Formed as part of Czechoslovakia in 1918, occupied by Nazi Germany from 1939 and taken over by the communists in 1948. The 1968 Prague Spring reforms were crushed by a Soviet-led invasion, and the 1989 Velvet Revolution, led by Václav Havel, ended communist rule. Czechoslovakia split peacefully in 1993, and the Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004.
