Democratic Republic of the Congo

Political journey

Independent from Belgium in 1960, Congo saw its first prime minister, Patrice Lumumba, killed in 1961 and was ruled for 32 years by the dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. His fall in 1997 led to the deadliest conflicts since the Second World War, which drew in many neighboring countries. Eastern Congo is still torn by armed groups, notably the Rwanda-backed M23, under President Félix Tshisekedi.

Félix Tshisekedi

President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2019 to present

Son of the opposition leader Étienne Tshisekedi, he became president in 2019 and won re-election in 2023 while facing a long conflict with M23 rebels in the east.

Félix Tshisekedi sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and leaning authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly nationalist on nation, leaning authoritarian on liberty and authority and leaning strength-first on war and peace. The profile is close to the middle on environment.
