Denmark

Political journey

One of Europe’s oldest monarchies, Denmark lost Norway in 1814 and Schleswig-Holstein in 1864, was occupied by Germany from 1940 to 1945, then built a welfare state and joined NATO and the European Community. It remains a constitutional monarchy with its own currency, and rules Greenland and the Faroe Islands as self-governing territories.
