Djibouti

Political journey

Independent from France in 1977, Djibouti has had only two presidents, Hassan Gouled Aptidon and his nephew Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, in office since 1999. Its position on the Red Sea has made it home to military bases of the United States, France, China, Japan and others, and a major port for landlocked Ethiopia.
