Dominican Republic

Political journey

Independent from Haiti in 1844 and briefly returned to Spain, the Dominican Republic suffered US occupations and the 31-year dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who was assassinated in 1961. It has held regular elections since 1978 and grown into one of the Caribbean’s largest economies, while tensions with Haiti over migration remain a defining issue.
