Egypt

Political journey

One of the world’s oldest states, modern Egypt became a republic after the 1952 coup led by Nasser, who nationalized the Suez Canal. Sadat made peace with Israel in 1979, and Mubarak ruled for 30 years until the 2011 uprising. After a brief Muslim Brotherhood government, the army took power in 2013, and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ruled ever since.
