El Salvador

Political journey

A civil war between the state and leftist guerrillas killed some 75,000 people from 1980 to 1992. Peace brought democracy, but also powerful gangs. Since 2019 Nayib Bukele has jailed tens of thousands of people in a mass crackdown that sharply lowered murders, and he has removed presidential term limits, drawing both praise and criticism.

Portrait of Nayib Bukele

Nayib Bukele

President of El Salvador, 2019 to present

His mass-detention campaign against gangs sharply cut homicides but drew human-rights criticism. He also made Bitcoin legal tender in 2021.

Nayib Bukele sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly anti-establishment on institutions and strongly tech-optimist on technology. The profile is close to the middle on interventionism.
