Equatorial Guinea

Political journey

Independent from Spain in 1968, Equatorial Guinea suffered the brutal rule of Francisco Macías Nguema until his nephew Teodoro Obiang Nguema overthrew him in 1979. Obiang has ruled ever since, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders. Oil made the country rich on paper, but the wealth stays with the ruling family.
