Political journey

A former Italian colony federated with Ethiopia and then annexed by it in 1962, Eritrea won independence in 1993 after a 30-year war. President Isaias Afwerki has ruled since, with no elections, no independent media and indefinite national service. It fought a border war with Ethiopia from 1998 to 2000 and took part in the 2020 Tigray war.
