Ethiopia

Political journey

One of the world’s oldest states, Ethiopia was never colonized apart from a brief Italian occupation. Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown in 1974 by the Derg communist junta, which was ousted in 1991 by rebels. A federal system was built on ethnic regions, and Abiy Ahmed, prime minister since 2018, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 before a devastating war in Tigray from 2020 to 2022.
