Finland

Political journey

Part of Sweden and then a Russian grand duchy, Finland declared independence in 1917 and survived a civil war and two wars against the Soviet Union. It stayed neutral during the Cold War, joined the EU in 1995, and abandoned military non-alignment by joining NATO in 2023 after Russia invaded Ukraine.
