France

Political journey

The 1789 Revolution ended the monarchy and spread ideas of citizenship and secularism, followed by an empire under Napoleon and a series of republics. After the Fourth Republic collapsed over the Algerian war, de Gaulle founded the strong-presidency Fifth Republic in 1958. France is a nuclear power, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a founder of the European Union.
