Gabon

Political journey

Independent from France in 1960, Gabon was ruled for 56 years by the Bongo family, first Omar and then his son Ali, on oil wealth. A coup in 2023 ended their rule, and General Brice Oligui Nguema, a cousin of Ali Bongo, was elected president in 2025.
