Greece

Political journey

Independent from the Ottoman Empire in the 1820s, Greece has lived through a civil war in 1946 to 1949, a military junta from 1967 to 1974 and a return to democracy. It joined the European Community in 1981 and the euro in 2001, and its debt crisis of the 2010s brought years of austerity and international bailouts.
