Guinea-Bissau

Political journey

Independent from Portugal in 1974 after a war led by Amílcar Cabral’s PAIGC, Guinea-Bissau has had repeated coups and mutinies, an army heavily involved in politics, and a role as a hub for cocaine trafficking. The military seized power again in November 2025, interrupting a presidential election count.
