Guinea

Political journey

Independent from France in 1958 under Sékou Touré, whose harsh rule lasted until 1984, Guinea was then run by Lansana Conté and by military juntas. Alpha Condé won the first free election in 2010 but was overthrown in 2021 by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who was elected president in 2025. The country holds huge bauxite and iron ore reserves, including the giant Simandou mine.
