Guyana

Political journey

A British colony until independence in 1966, Guyana was governed for decades by Forbes Burnham’s authoritarian socialism and then by rival Afro-Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese parties. Huge offshore oil discoveries since 2015 have made it one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, and it defends its claim to the Essequibo region against Venezuela.
