Hungary

Political journey

Once half of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory after 1918 and became communist after the Second World War. Its 1956 uprising was crushed by Soviet troops, and in 1989 it opened the way for the fall of the Iron Curtain. Viktor Orbán governed from 2010 to 2026, building what he called an illiberal democracy, until Péter Magyar won the 2026 election.
