Iceland

Political journey

Settled by Norse people in the 9th century, Iceland has one of the world’s oldest parliaments, the Althing, founded around 930. Under Norwegian and then Danish rule, it became a sovereign kingdom in 1918 and a republic in 1944. It joined NATO but never the EU, and after its 2008 banking collapse it recovered to become a world leader in gender equality.
