Independent from the Netherlands in 1949 after a war of independence, Indonesia was led by Sukarno and then ruled by General Suharto’s New Order dictatorship from 1967 to 1998. Since the reform era it has become one of the world’s largest democracies and its largest Muslim-majority country. Prabowo Subianto, a former general, has been president since 2024.
