Italy

Political journey

Unified in the 1860s under the Kingdom of Sardinia, Italy was a fascist dictatorship under Mussolini from 1922 to 1943 and became a republic by referendum in 1946. Postwar politics were dominated by the Christian Democrats and a large Communist Party until that party system collapsed in the 1990s, followed by frequent coalitions, most recently a right-wing government led by Giorgia Meloni.
