Ivory Coast

Political journey

Independent from France in 1960, Ivory Coast was a stable, prosperous country under Félix Houphouët-Boigny for three decades. After his death in 1993 ethnic and regional rivalries split the country, leading to civil wars in 2002 and in 2010 to 2011. Alassane Ouattara, president since 2010, has led an economic boom while critics question his hold on power.
