Japan

Political journey

Modernized rapidly after the 1868 Meiji Restoration and built an empire that ended with defeat in 1945. Under the US-drafted 1947 constitution it became a pacifist democracy with the emperor as a symbol, ruled almost continuously by the Liberal Democratic Party. Sanae Takaichi became its first woman prime minister in 2025.
