Jordan

Political journey

Created as a British-backed emirate in 1921 and independent in 1946, Jordan absorbed the West Bank and Palestinian refugees, lost the West Bank in 1967 and made peace with Israel in 1994. Its Hashemite monarchy, led by King Abdullah II since 1999, has survived regional upheavals with Western and Gulf support.
