Kazakhstan

Political journey

The largest country in Central Asia, Kazakhstan became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991 and was led by Nursultan Nazarbayev until 2019, who built an oil-based economy. His successor Kassym-Jomart Tokayev survived mass unrest in January 2022 and has made limited political reforms while balancing between Russia, China and the West.

A career diplomat who succeeded Nursultan Nazarbayev, he put down the January 2022 unrest with help from Russian-led troops and has promoted a “Just Kazakhstan” of reform under a strong presidency.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: centered on economy and strongly authoritarian.
