Kenya

Political journey

Independent from Britain in 1963 after the Mau Mau uprising, Kenya was led by Jomo Kenyatta, then became a one-party state under Daniel arap Moi until multiparty politics returned in 1991. Disputed elections in 2007 led to violence, and a new constitution followed in 2010. William Ruto, president since 2022, has faced mass protests over taxes and the cost of living.

Portrait of William Ruto

William Ruto

President of Kenya, 2022 to present

Won as a self-styled champion of ordinary "hustlers." Mass protests over tax increases in 2024 forced him to withdraw a finance bill.

William Ruto sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: leaning free market and leaning authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly religious on religion, leaning authoritarian on liberty and authority and leaning tech-optimist on technology.
