Kosovo

Political journey

A province of Serbia with an Albanian majority, Kosovo saw its autonomy revoked in 1989, then a guerrilla war in 1998 and 1999 and a NATO air campaign that ended Serbian control. Run by the United Nations from 1999, it declared independence in 2008, which many countries recognize but Serbia, Russia and China do not. Tension over the Serb-majority north continues.

Who leads Kosovo today

Portrait of Albin Kurti

Albin Kurti

Prime Minister of Kosovo, 2020 and 2021 to present

A former student protest leader who heads the left-wing nationalist Vetëvendosje movement, and whose governments have pressed Kosovo’s sovereignty in confrontations with Serbia.

Albin Kurti sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: leaning state-led and slightly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly nationalist on nation, leaning state-led on economy and leaning anti-establishment on institutions. The profile is close to the middle on interventionism.
