Kuwait

Political journey

A Gulf emirate ruled by the Al-Sabah family since the 18th century, Kuwait became independent from Britain in 1961, was invaded by Iraq in 1990 and was liberated by a US-led coalition in 1991. It has had the Gulf’s liveliest elected parliament, but recurring crises led Emir Mishal to suspend parliament in 2024.
