Laos

Political journey

Once a French protectorate and a kingdom, Laos was drawn into the Vietnam War and became the world’s most heavily bombed country per person. The communist Pathet Lao took power in 1975 and abolished the monarchy. It remains a one-party state that has opened its economy, with growing dependence on Chinese investment and debt.
